Vineyard Notes
The fruit for The Plow 2024 comes 2/3rds from the PN777 in our favorite sites for The Plow, Blocks1 and 2, and the rest from directly below block 2, also with PN777. This variety on the Geldermann/Jory soils create complex and yet lyrical flavors and textures. This is a remarkable vintage emphasizing the special terroir characteristics of these blocks. Wines grown here are the most balanced and intriguing of our estate, with floral notes, minerality, freshness, round tannins, and length. There was no need to add even small portions from other blocks to complete the cuvée.
Production Notes
The fruit is hand-picked and sorted in the vineyard, then sorted again on the crush pad. Only whole berries are selected for the fermenters. Whole cluster fruit is 14% of the 2023 cuvée. Fermentation proceeds with wild yeasts, with the juice going half in concrete tanks and half in stainless-steel. Cap management begins with gentle pump overs, followed by traditional pigeage by foot, as needed. After wild-yeast primary fermentation and spontaneous malolactic fermentation, the wines aged in 22% new and 78% neutral French oak barriques for 12 months followed by an additional 5 months in stainless steel tank to bring the cuvée together prior to bottling.
Winemaker Notes
2024 has been described as a perfect growing season. Budbreak began in early April and bloom took place third week of June. Early summer temperatures were in the 70s and 80s, with a couple of heat spikes in the high 90s, in July, when these can be beneficial. The temperatures became cooler in September and October, allowing harvest to extend more than a month with each parcel being picked at optimal ripeness and freshness. Picking began the second week of September, and each block could be picked at exactly the right time.
Food Pairing Notes
