Our 2024 Estate Pinot Noir has a densely aromatic nose with notes of violets, clove, black cardamom, anise, and black truffle. As it opens up, nuances of cinnamon, crushed rock, and graphite emerge. On the palate, the flavors shift to black fruits and black tea, with dense mineral notes mingling with violets and porcini.

The finish is quite structural, featuring plush, sweet tannins that balance the rich fruit and spice of the mid-palate. This is a particularly dense expression of Estate Pinot Noir, shaped by the intense structural elements of blocks 4 and 7, which together make up nearly a third of the cuvée. This is monumental.

Production Notes
The fruit was sorted in the vineyard, hand-picked, then wild-yeast fermented in medium sized concrete and stainless-steel tanks. The Estate Pinot 2023 has no whole cluster for the first time since we began. The grapes are sorted first in the vineyard and then by hand and machine at the crushpad, with only whole berries being selected for fermentation. Bins of destemmed whole berries are carried by forklift to the fermenters. Fermentation is spontaneous with wild yeasts as is malolactic. Primarily the cap is maintained by pumpovers, but one or two punch downs are done by traditional pigeage towards the end of primary fermentation, as needed. After fermentation, the Estate Pinot Noir 2024 is aged in a combination of 26% new and 74% old French oak barriques for 12 months and six in tank, prior to bottling.
Winemaker Notes
2024 has been described as a perfect growing season. Budbreak began in early April, and bloom took place third week of June. Early summer temperatures were in the 70s and 80s, with a couple of heat spikes in the high 90s, in July, when these can be beneficial. The temperatures became cooler in September and October, allowing harvest to extend more than a month with each parcel being picked at optimal ripeness and freshness. Picking began the second week of September, and each block could be picked at exactly the right time.
Food Pairing Notes
The 2024 Estate Pinot belongs with steak or pork tenderloin, grilled game birds, and hard cheeses. Loin of lamb, Lamb chops, Filet Mignon, veal chop, veal scallopini with mushroom sauce, pasta with Bolognese sauce, charcuterie, hamburger, Kalbi, Bulgogi. Teriyaki, Vietnamese shaking beef, Morel or Porcini risotto. Rack of Lamb with Provençale herbs. Venison, boar and antelope steaks or in a Bourguignon-type stew. Experimentation is welcome!
