2018 Avni Pinot Noir

93 pts and Smart Buy | Wine Spectator "A lithe wine, with laser focus, offering layers of snappy cherry, river stone and savory dark spice flavors that build tension toward fine-grained tannins. Drink now through 2027." - Tim Fish

Wine Profile
Tasting Notes
The 2018 Avni Pinot Noir has beautiful expressions of rose petal, wet stone, black plum, red cherry along with savory elements. It has slightly more structure than the Avni Pinot Noir from earlier vintages but is also layered with seductive fruit and a supple texture. It is vibrant and fresh.

Vineyard Notes
The 2018 Avni Pinot Noir is 100% Estate Grown. The fruit selection is primarily from the deeper, Jory soils in our lower blocks. In such a drought-stricken vintage, it was important to build a balanced, supple texture from the fruit selection. For this reason, we also decided to include 11% carbonic maceration fruit from PN115 in Block 9.
Production Notes
The 2018 Avni Pinot Noir was fermented with approximately 19% whole cluster fruit. The grapes were fed bin by bin, not pumped, into small format stainless steel fermenting tanks of between 2 to 7 tons capacity. Fermentation began with gentle pump-overs and may have included one or two punch downs toward the end of the cuvasion. 2018 was unique in that the cuvaison only took place for 15 days which is shorter than usual. Extraction in 2018 naturally occurred more quickly than in past vintages. Pigeage is done traditionally by foot to ensure a gentle extraction of tannins. The fermentation occurs with ambient, “wild” yeast. After fermentation, the wines age in a combination of new and neutral French oak barriques for 12 months and four in tank prior to bottling.
Food Pairing Notes
The 2018 Avni Pinot Noir can be enjoyed with sausages, roast chicken, pork loin and other lighter meats, and its freshness allows for pairing with oily fish like black cod, grilled salmon or tuna. This is a wine that also pairs perfectly with aged cow’s milk cheeses like Gouda, Farmhouse Cheddar, Bandaged Cheddar, Pleasant Ridge Reserve, Parmigiano-Reggiano, Cantal, Tomme de Savoye and many others. It is also pleasant for sipping before a meal with hors d’oeuvres and charcuterie. Because this is a slightly more structured vintage, decanting will help open it up prior to serving.
